Signal
Today, social media does not incentivize consistency. It is incentivizing perfunctory. Creators feel like they have to post, even if they have nothing to say. The result is bad content, and we all suffer for it.
New social media will be focusing on impact over process. On sharing of knowledge over sharing of information. On creating value over creating noise.
The generative AI that is currently mostly used to create slop may be a tool to help us reduce noise and amplify signal.
The underlying reason why we suffer for clickbait titles and over-exaggerated emotions on thumbnails is the business model. We moved to digital, but we kept business models of the past. We sell attention, instead of aligning ourselves with the customers and charging for the fair value add to their lives.
It will take a lot of work and consistency to change this, and this is what we are doing with People App joining many more startups. Some of us will win.
With Large Language Models enabling natural conversations, and hype around it, we have an opportunity of a lifetime to place the capital and hard work towards the creation of better infrastructure for our society.
Imaging how much better our lives could be when signal is amplified over noise in our networks. Imagine the daily serendipity of truly efficient networks. Computers have the potential to augment us in so many ways!
Amplifying beneficial signal for humans, we can create so much value that we have a real chance to compete with the monsters of legacy social media.
